特集記事：地下水 – 見えざるものを可視化する

要点：
1. 2022年、国連は地下水に焦点を当てています。地下水は必要不可欠な天然資源ですが、乱開発されていることが多く、一般的に汚染のリスクがあります。12月にパリで開催される地下水サミットをはじめとする一連のイベントが予定されています。

2. 地下水は、世界の飲料水の約半分、灌漑農業に必要な水の約40％、工業生産に必要な水の約1/3を供給しています。また、多くの生態系にとっても、特に乾季の水源として重要な役割を果たしています。地下水は重要な役割を担っているにもかかわらず、管理が不十分な場合が多く、モニタリングシステムが未発達で、信頼性の高いデータが不足している。

今年、国連は、貴重でありながら管理が行き届かないことが多い天然資源である地下水に関する一連の活動を行います。これらの活動には、3月22日の世界水の日に「地下水-見えないものを見えるようにする」というテーマで行われるものや、12月7〜8日にパリで開催される国連水地下水サミットが含まれます。また、3月21日～26日にセネガルで開催される第9回世界水フォーラムや、8月23日～9月1日にストックホルムで開催される「2022年世界水週間」でも、地下水が主要なテーマとなります。

Groundwater - Making the Invisible Visible

1. In 2022, the UN has a focus on groundwater – an essential natural resource that is often overexploited and commonly at risk of pollution. A series of events are planned, including a Groundwater Summit in Paris in December.

2. Groundwater provides close to half of the world’s drinking water, around 40% of the water needed for irrigated agriculture and about one-third of the water required for industrial production. It is also of great importance for many ecosystems, especially as a source of water in dry seasons. Despite the vital role of groundwater, it is often poorly managed – systems for monitoring are underdeveloped and reliable data is scarce.

3. The 4Revs Intelligence will follow the discussions on how groundwater can be better managed and more sustainably used, including how businesses can contribute, and provide updates.

This year, the United Nations will organise a series of activities on groundwater as a precious but often poorly managed natural resource. These activities include the World Water Day on 22 March with the theme “Groundwater – Making the Invisible Visible” and a dedicated UN-Water Groundwater Summit in Paris 7-8 December. In addition, groundwater will be a major theme at the 9th World Water Forum in Senegal 21-26 March and at the World Water Week 2022 in Stockholm 23 August to 1 September.

This month’s 4Revs Feature provides a background to this focus – why groundwater deserves to be highlighted in the international development community – and gives some details on the major activities that are planned for 2022. The 4Revs Intelligence service will follow the discussions on groundwater throughout the year, including new scientific findings, policy initiatives, and business opportunities.
